First edition, first printing. Publisher's original light green cloth with titles and decorations to the spine in blue and red and a mask motif in blue to the upper board. Without dustwrapper. Top edge purple. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping and fraying of the cloth at the head of the spine. The cloth whilst mottled or faded as always is otherwise clean and fresh. The contents, with a previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, a handful of small corner creases and a short closed tear to the fore-edge of the last page, are otherwise clean and bright throughout. An attractive example.

Hammett's last novel, a detective story set in New York during the last days of Prohibition. The basis for a series of films released between 1934 and 1939. The novel's central characters, Nick and Nora Charles, became hugely popular and starred in their own radio plays, television series, and stage productions. (Hubin; Layman A6.1.a).
