First American edition. Publisher's original green cloth with elaborate gilt decoration depicting a tail-coated grasshopper recounting stories to an audience of insects (titled "He filled their listening ears with wondrous things") to the upper board, and with titles and further decoration in gilt to the spine. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece (with tissue guard), woodcut title-vignette, and woodcut illustrations in text. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with some minor chipping to the spine ends and a little sunning to the spine. The contents with a small crease to the top corner of a handful of pages and some occasional scattered spotting are otherwise in very good order and remain free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. An unusually bright copy.

The first American edition of the first series, published in London two years previously, of Miss L.M. Budgen's attractive anthropomorphic tales of insects.
