THE NATURAL HISTORY OF MONKEYS

First edition. Contemporary full diced calf with four raised bands to the spine, compartments decorated in gilt and with titles in gilt to spine label. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of Buffon, a hand-coloured engraved title page depicting a young rhesus monkey, 30 further hand-coloured plates depicting various species of ape, and numerous in-text woodcuts. Errata slip bound in before the contents page. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a very small hole to the leather covering the rear board and some rubbing to the boards and spine. The contents with a mid nineteenth-century owner's ink inscription to the front endpaper, a few minor marks to the preliminary pages, a little creasing to the top corner of a handful of pages and with a few of the engraved plates standing slightly proud of the textblock are otherwise in good order, the plates remaining clean and the colours bright. A nice example.

The first volume of Jardine's celebrated 'Naturalist's Library' series and one of the most appealing, containing a wonderful series of attractive hand-coloured engravings displaying a wide range of characterful primates.
