First edition, first issue. publisher's original red cloth with decorative gold titles to the spine and upper board, a triple ruled gilt border to the upper and lower boards, and a small gilt illustration to the lower board. All edges gilt. With the first issue black endpapers, as opposed to the later issue white endpapers. Hand lettered and illustrated throughout by the author. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, the spine a little faded and with a very tiny patch of wear to the spine head. The contents are clean and bright throughout and without stamps or inscriptions. An attractive example in entirely original condition.
A facsimile of the original manuscript hand written and illustrated by Lewis Carroll that was later developed into the beloved Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Carroll's illustrations were used as a reference point by John Tenniel when creating his now iconic Alice in Wonderland Illustrations, and many are indeed very similar to those in this book.
