First edition, first printing. Publisher's original green cloth with silver titles and illustration to the spine. Without the rare dustwrapper. With a frontispiece illustration and line drawings throughout the text by the author's sister Ruth Gervis. A very good copy, the binding square and firm although somewhat rubbing to the spine and board edges, the tips a touch frayed. The contents, with just a few isolated foxing spots to the page margins are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps.
The scarce first printing of Noel Streatfeild's first book for children. The novel was runner up for the inaugural Carnegie Medal (the award was later won by Streatfeild for 'The Circus is Coming') and has twice been the basis for BBC television adaptations. A stage adaptation by Kendall Fever, directed by Katy Rudd is due to premiere in London in November 2024.
