PLUTARCH'S LIVES; Translated from the Greek. With notes Historical and Critical from M. Dacier. To Which is Prefixed The Life of Plutarch.

Early edition. Complete in eight volumes. Contemporary brown calf with five raised bands, gilt decorative compartments and gilt titles on red and green leather labels to the spines, double ruled gilt borders to the boards. Title pages in red and black. Illustrated with black and white engravings and decorations throughout. In very good condition. The bindings are firm and the gilt tooling bright. All volumes are lightly rubbed and bumped to the extremities, the leather scuffed and darkened in a few places, with varying degrees of cracking to the spine hinges, though all are holding firm. The contents, with the bookplate of John Henry Sparke in each volume and a little toned or spotted to the margins in places, are otherwise clean throughout.

A handsome set in a contemporary binding of Plutarch's series of biographies of famous Greek and Roman men which has remained an important source on these figures and their historical and geographical context for centuries. (ESTC T109302)
