SCENES IN AFRICA For the Amusement and Instruction of Little Tarry-At-Home Travellers.

First edition. Publisher's original quarter roan over printed paper-covered boards. Illustrated with one folding map and 84 hand-coloured engravings across 28 plates (complete). A good copy, the binding firm with rubbing to the boards and wear to the extremities. The map is defective, with one panel (about a third of the map) missing. The contents with two slightly loose gatherings (pp.5-8 and 29-32, the first protruding and ragged at the bottom edge), loss to the corner of pp.19-20 (not affecting the text), creasing to the front free endpaper, and occasional marking to page edges, are otherwise in good order. Scarce with the plates coloured.

A journey through Africa designed for a young audience describing the lives and customs of different nations and reflecting the impact of colonisation. Illustrated with a fantastic series of brightly hand-coloured engravings depicting everything from traditional costumes, to ferocious crocodiles and Egyptian tombs. The book pays particular attention to the slave trade, narrating its atrocities so 'that every little boy and girl may grow up' to regard it with 'horror'.
