Limited edition, number 79 of 450 copies printed. Publisher's original full vellum with calf title label to the spine. Top edge gilt. Illustrated with 14 full-page wood engravings, one by each artist. A very good copy, the binding square and tight with slight rubbing to the boards, a minor scratch to the upper board, and some rubbing and loss to the spine label. The contents with the neat bookplate of Helena M. Hand Paterson to the front pastedown are otherwise clean throughout, with both the text and plates remaining fresh and bright.
A wonderfully produced edition of the Apocrypha printed at the Curwen Press for the Cresset Press, showcasing the immense talent of the leading wood engravers of the period. Founded by Dennis Cohen, the Cresset Press published several finely printed and illustrated books over a four year period between 1927 and 1931, employing the best printers, presses, and illustrators. The present collaborative work forms a superb example of its output, containing 14 large, beautifully executed engravings by artists including Eric Ravilious, Paul Nash, and Leon Underwood.
