First edition, first printing. 24pp. Publisher's original stapled paper wrappers with titles in red and black to the front cover. Illustrated with three black and white drawings by John Minton. A very good or better copy, the binding secure with rusting to the staples and minor chipping to the extremities. The contents with toning are otherwise clean throughout and free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. An excellent example of a fragile publication.

An account of life, politics and religion in Israel written just two years after its establishment as a state, by the outspoken politician and journalist Woodrow Wyatt for the progressive journal Tribune. Beginning his political career as a Labour MP, but later drifting across the political spectrum, ending up as a friend and confidant of Margaret Thatcher, Wyatt writes supportively, although with a critical eye, of the emerging Israeli nation, praising what he saw as its collectivist tendencies. This is complemented by the wonderful drawings by Minton, which nicely capture the hopeful spirit of those ordinary people who attempted to forge a new Israel. A scarce title on the early history of modern Israel, and an unusual John Minton item.
