THE LIFE AND CIRCUMSTANCES OF JAMES BRYDGES, FIRST DUKE OF CHANDOS

First edition, first printing. Publisher's original black cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. With 25 plates throughout the text (some folding). A fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the original dustwrapper, clipped and repriced (63/- net) by the publisher to the front flap but otherwise without loss or tears. The spine is fractionally toned and there are a few light marks to the upper panel. An excellent example. Scarce.

An unsurpassed work on Chandos and Cannons. Much of the information mined and reconstructed by the authors from The Huntingdon Library's 1925 acquisition of the Brydges papers; comprising seventy volumes of correspondence (upwards of 30,000 letters spanning 1700 and 1744), James Brydges' Daily Journal (1697-1702) and a family register begun by Chandos' mother and continued by her three daughters in law.
