BILBO: En Hobbits Äventyr. [The Hobbit].

First edition with these illustrations. Publisher's original pink paper covered boards, green cloth spine with titles in gilt. Illustrated with 58 line drawings of which 12 are full-page by the Swedish speaking Finnish artist and illustrator Tove Jansson. Text in Swedish, translated by Britt Gerda Hallqvist. A superb very near fine copy, the binding square and tight, the tips of the spine with very slight bumping and rubbing and some mild fading to the upper edge of the front board. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. An exceptional example.

The scarce and wonderful Swedish edition of The Hobbit, illustrated by the the much-loved creator of the Moomin books Tove Jansson. Arguably the most famous and sought after foreign language edition of Tolkien's fantasy masterpiece. This was the second Swedish translation and the first to meet Tolkien's approval. The first Swedish edition (and first ever foreign language edition) was published in 1947 under the title "Hompen", translated by Tore Zetterholm and illustrated by Torbjörn Zetterholm. Tolkien took great umbrage at the publisher's failure to use the correct title, the translator's disrespectful butchering of the text and the illustrator's interpretation of Gollum; an experience he ensured was not to be repeated in subsequent translations or editions. (Hammond & Anderson, C4 Swedish).
