BLACK FOREST BEAR MIRROR

A carved wood Black Forest wall mirror in the form of a bear holding a crescent moon into which he gazes at his own reflection. The bear with original glass eyes. Original bevelled mirror plate and brass fixings for wall mounting. Printed paper label verso inscribed: "Chalet Minerve / & Chalet Suisse / Emile Egger / ci-devant Sesri & Brugg / Fabrique de sculptures artistiques / Interlaken". The bear remains in excellent condition with just a little rubbing to a few areas, notably to the tips of its ears and the side of its left arm. The original mirror plate, which sits slightly loosely in its mount (although is completely secure when mounted in situ on a wall), has a little wear to the tips and extremities but is otherwise in very good order.

A superb and immensely characterful example of turn-of-the-century Swiss Black Forest wood carving, executed in exquisite detail by a master craftsman. A rare and enchanting design of a quality that is not often seen.
