DRAWING OF A SAINT WITH CHERUBS WITHIN AN ELABORATE BORDER

An original drawing by Alphonse Mucha in pencil on heavy paper. This piece is an illustration for Andelicek z Baroku [Little Baroque Angel] by Josef Hais Týnecký, J. Otto, Prague, 1929. Picturing a beautifully rendered saint and priest flanked by two cherubs, framed by an elaborate border of wildflowers and baroque-style ornamentation, with space for the book's text, and perfectly showcasing Mucha's characteristic delicate yet confident line-work. The drawing itself (including the penciled frame) measures 28.5cm x 35cm while the sheet of paper (which has been taped at the top rear to the window-mount with one piece of gum strip) measures 33cm x 37.5cm. Signed in pencil to the lower right. Mounted, framed and glazed using archival materials.

Mucha is known for his distinctive strong, sweeping, curved lines and natural motifs. His work has become the most loved and recognised representation of Art Nouveau, and continues to have a lasting impact on visual arts today. This original drawing offers a fascinating, intimate look at the artist's accomplished use of pencil. Provenance: Z umelecke pozustalosti ("From artistic inheritance, Alfonse Muchy") ink stamp on verso; "Narodni Galerie V Praze, vývoz" ("National Gallery Prague, export") ink stamp on verso; purchased from Rizzoli Bookstore, New York, December 1973; private US collection.
