First edition. Four volumes. Finely bound in late nineteenth / early twentieth century full brown morocco by Birdsall, Northampton. Five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments and titles in gilt to the spines. Upper and lower boards triple ruled in gilt. Inner dentelles elaborately decorated in gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Retaining the original half titles in all four volumes. An attractive example. The bindings are sound with some rubbing to the extremities, the contents with spotting and light toning throughout, mostly confined to the blank margins. Volume ll has some damp staining however it is generally faint and does not detract from the text.
The first edition of Jane Austen's first and last completed novels. Published posthumously, volume l includes the "Biographical Notice of The Author" by her brother Henry, which is the first acknowledgement in print of Jane Austen as the author of any of her novels. (Gilson, A9)
