TALES ABOUT CHRISTMAS

First edition. Handsomely bound in contemporary full tan calf with four raised bands to the spine, ruled in gilt, and with gilt morocco title label. Decorative engraved title page. Profusely illustrated throughout with black and white engravings. A very good copy, the binding square and tight with a little rubbing to the extremities and a minor scuff to the bottom corner of the lower board. The contents with a neat contemporary previous owner's name in ink to the half title page, the bottom corner of the half title page with a very small area clipped away, and a little spotting to the preliminary pages are otherwise in very good order and clean throughout.

A charming and early collection of Christmas facts and stories, nicely illustrated with dozens of engraved vignettes, including sections on "the origins of the Christmas Festival", "what English people mean by Christmas", "what Christmas should be", the Christmas dinner, decorations, and "the spirit of companionship observable at Christmas", as well as Christmas ghost stories and numerous historical and contemporary Christmas tales. A wonderful insight into Christmas celebrations in the early years of Queen Victoria's reign, published just five years before Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'.
