First editions, first printings in book form. Two volumes. Publisher's original light blue and navy blue cloth with titles in gilt to the upper boards and spine. All edges gilt. With a total of 90 illustrations throughout the text by Sidney Paget. A very good set. "Adventures" is in the correct first state binding with a little rubbing and darkening with minor fraying at the spine tips and corners. The contents with a small previous owner's name dated Feb 1893 to the blank reverse of the patterned front endpaper, and the odd finger mark and foxing spot to the margins are otherwise clean throughout. The inner hinges have been professionally strengthened at the front and rear using similar paper stock to that of the original endpapers. "Memoirs" is a little rubbed and frayed at the spine tips and corners, the contents with a contemporary retailer's blind stamp to the upper corner of the front endpaper are otherwise clean throughout.
Comprising 24 stories including several of the consulting detective's most famous cases: "A Scandal In Bohemia", "The Five Orange Pips", "The Man With The Twisted Lip" and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", all solved with the assistance of Dr Watson. The second volume includes "The Final Problem" introducing Holmes' arch-enemy, Professor Moriarty; Paget's frontispiece illustration depicting the detective's [author and publisher's commercially] disastrous plunge at the Reichenbach Falls.
