First editions in book form. Two volumes. With 90 illustrations throughout by Sidney Paget. Uniformly bound in full blue morocco by Bayntun (Riviere) of Bath. The upper and lower boards with a gilt double fillet border. Five raised bands, gilt double fillet compartments and titles in gilt to the spines the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with gilt fillets and corner pieces. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Original [first state] cloth bound in at the rear. Housed in a purpose made blue cloth slipcase. In fine condition, the bindings square and tight with a touch of uniform fading to the spines. The contents are clean and fresh throughout, without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps.

Comprising 24 stories including several of the consulting detective's most famous cases: "A Scandal In Bohemia", "The Five Orange Pips", "The Man With The Twisted Lip" and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", all solved with the assistance of Dr Watson. The second volume includes "The Final Problem" introducing Holmes' arch-enemy, Professor Moriarty; Paget's frontispiece illustration depicting the detective's [author and publisher's commercially] disastrous plunge at the Reichenbach Falls.
