A handsome Edwardian pocket chess set produced for J.C. Vickery (their gilt stamp to the inside cover). Sumptuously bound in full dark red morocco with a fastening clasp to the fore-edge. The folder opens to reveal a tan calf interior forming a chess board with 32 celluloid pieces and a facing pocket to contain notes etc. The folder itself is in wonderful near fine condition with just a little wear to the side of the button on the clasp. The contents with two of the pieces being slightly later (and not obvious) replacements are otherwise in similarly excellent condition.
A splendid example of a travelling chess set, produced for the luxury goods retailer J.C. Vickery of Regent Street, London. Vickery had royal warrants from the King and Queen, as well as numerous European monarchs.
