THE GIRAFFE AND THE PELLY ME

Proof copy of the first edition, first printing. Publisher's original pictorial boards. Issued without a dustwrapper. Illustrated in colour throughout by Quentin Blake. An excellent very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, bright and fresh, the tips of the spine ever so slightly bumped. The contents, with the publisher's 'Proof Copy Only' stamp to the front endpaper, are otherwise clean throughout. A superb example, very uncommon in proof state.

The proof binding differs from that of the published first edition in that it features a publisher's blurb underneath the illustration to the rear board, in addition to 'Provisional Publication Date: 29 August 1985', neither of which appear in the published version. The proof copy is also bound with white endpapers, whilst in the published binding they are dark blue. This wonderful picture book, incorporating elements from Dahl's earlier stories: sweets made by the Willy Wonka company (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory); Muggle-Wump (The Enormous Crocodile and The Twits); Fizzwinkles from China (spelled Fizzwinkel in The BFG); was runner up for the 1985 Kurt Maschler Award.
