THE HOBBIT [POP-UP BOOK] Three-Dimensional Book.

First UK edition, first printing. Original laminated illustrated boards. Consisting of five elaborate three dimensional scenes illustrated in colour by John Howe and utilising many pop-up and interactive mechanisms. Each spread is accompanied by pull out scrolls with text that contextualises the scene. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm, the corners and spine tips lightly bumped, the contents clean and complete and without stamps or inscriptions. The 'door bolt' moving part on the first page is a little rubbed and the tab of the final page's scroll in lightly creased, all pop-up and moving parts are complete and functioning correctly. A lovely copy of an unusual book.

John Howe is one of the most significant illustrators of Tolkien; along with Alan Lee, Howe was a chief conceptual designer on the 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' film trilogies which shaped the modern imagination's visual understanding of Middle-earth. He has also illustrated many Tolkien-related books, games and merchandise, as well as other major fantasy works by authors such as C. S. Lewis, Robin Hobb and George R. R. Martin.
