First hardcover Arthur Rackham edition. Original red paper-covered boards with black lettering to the front panel, in the illustrated dustwrapper. Illustrated red and white endpapers. Colour frontispiece, three further colour plates and seventeen black and white drawings throughout the text by Arthur Rackham. Printed on laid paper (chain lines and watermarks visible), fore- and lower page edges rough-cut, as issued. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, the boards clean and sharp with a small, 2 cm deep, area of sunning to the upper edge of the front panel. The contents are clean and bright, without inscriptions, stamps or spotting. There is a small breach between the second and third page gatherings, without, however, any discernible loosening to the pages. The dustwrapper, lightly soiled, rubbed and nicked to edges and folds, has a number tears to the edges, most notably to the rear panel, where there are one or two patches of loss (the largest, a triangular patch c. 2 cm deep). Not price-clipped (2/6 net to the front flap). An excellent example of this beautifully illustrated Christmas Book.

The first trade edition, issued in 1931 was bound in pictorial wrappers, this is the first British hardcover edition.
