First UK edition in book form and the first Charles Robinson illustrated edition, first printing. Top edge green. Illustrated with 8 beautiful full page colour plates by Charles Robinson complete with captioned tissue guards, as well as a black and white design to the title page and a vignette to the half title. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm with light rubbing to the extremities. The gilt is bright and fresh. The contents with a small previous owner's name to the top right corner of the front endpaper are otherwise clean throughout. All of the plates and tissue guards remain in fine condition. There is a little spotting to the closed edge of the text block that does not encroach onto the page surface. A lovely example of a classic of childrens literature.

This children's classic was originally serialised in The American Magazine, beginning in Autumn 1910, the first edition in book form was first published simultaneously in the summer of 1911 by Frederick A. Stokes in New York and by William Heinemann in London. Only the London edition was illustrated by Charles Robinson (the American edition was illustrated by M. B. Kork).
