THE BURTHEN, THE RISK, AND THE GLORY: A biography of Sir James Brooke.

First edition, first printing. Publisher's original cream cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the dustwrapper featuring an illustration of 'Government House, Sarawak, 1860 (from Spenser St. John, Life in the Forests of the Far East, volume II)'. Illustrated with five black and white photographic plates. Map of Sarawak and Brunei to the front and rear endpapers and pastedowns. A better than very good copy, the binding firm and square, with bumping and rubbing to the spine ends and corners. The contents, with some light foxing to the pastedowns, endpapers and all edges of the closed text block, are otherwise clean and free from inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the rubbed and creased dustwrapper, that is lightly faded to the spine with the laminate flaking at the spine ends, but is otherwise free from loss or tears.

A biography of the first White Raja of Sarawak, James Brooke, with a focus on his later years in power and the tensions between the government, Raja and his family. Scarce.
