First edition, first printing. Publisher's original black cloth with orange titles to the upper board and spine, with dustwrapper. Illustrated with two folding original colour lithographs by Joan Miró, one by André Masson, and one by Matta, as well as numerous colour and black and white illustrations of Tanning's work. A very good copy, the binding firm and bright, with just a little bumping to extremities. The contents are clean throughout, with no inscriptions or stamps. There is a small crease to the corner of one of the Miro lithographs (not affecting the image), otherwise the lithographs are in good order with strong colours. The dustwrapper has some wear and a little curling to the extremities (as is common) and a few small tears, but is otherwise in good condition. A lovely example.
Recently the subject of a major retrospective at the Tate, this volume presents a superbly illustrated celebration of Tanning's art and writings, with contributions from over twenty-five authors and artists, and including four wonderful original lithographs by Miró, Masson, and Matta inspired by Tanning's work.
