First UK paperback edition, first printing. Original card wrappers designed by Berthold Wolpe. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean throughout. The red spots punctuating the black lettering on the spine are a little faded. Correctly priced 4s. 6d. net to the verso of the front cover. A very nice copy of the uncommon first Faber paperback edition of the author's second full-length play.
The original French version of Beckett's second full-length play was premiered at the Royal Court Theatre, London, on 3 April, 1957, directed by Roger Blin with Blin himself playing Hamm and Jean Martin as Clov. The author's own English translation was first performed at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York in January 1958, directed by Alan Schneider, with Lester Rawlins as Hamm and Alvin Epstein as Clov, the UK premiere following on 28 October at the Royal Court, with George Devine, like Roger Blin, directing as well as playing Hamm, and Jack MacGowran as Clov. The UK edition of play was first published in hard covers on April 25, 1958, with this first paperback edition following in April 1964. (Federman and Fletcher 376.11)
