First UK edition, first printing. The publisher's retained copy. Original black cloth with titles in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping to the spine. The contents with the publisher's "Archive Copy" stamp to the half title page and a couple of very minor marks to the textblock edge are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the very good dustwrapper, which has a little wear to the extremities and toning to the spine. An attractive example.
A colourful dramatisation of 1930s New York from the Pulitzer Prize-winning Rice. Incorporating an incredibly broad array of characters and situations, it paints a vibrant portrait of the city's many faceted life. Provenance: from the archive of the publisher Victor Gollancz.
