POIESIS: ILIAS and ODYSSEIA (THE ILIAD and THE ODYSSEY)

Two volumes. Limited edition, each volume one of 615 numbered copies. Folio. Publisher's original blue holland boards with paper title labels to the spines. Top edges trimmed, the others uncut. Printed in Greek type on Zanders handmade paper. Titles designed by Anna Simons. In original card slipcases. Lovely fine copies, the bindings square and firm with just a little fading to the spines and rubbing to the extremities. The contents with the bookplate of Robert Elwell to the front pastedown of each volume are otherwise clean and bright throughout. The slipcases with some marking, scuffs and splits are otherwise in good order. An attractive, unsophisticated set.

Influenced by the revival of fine press printing in England, and the Doves Press in particular, the Bremer Press, founded in 1911, became the finest private press in Germany. Adopting a similar ethos to the Doves Press, its books similarly rejected ornament (except for initials) and instead relied upon elegant design and impeccable printing. Indeed, "the Press was very much in the grand tradition...a few good special type faces being cut and used with magnificent effect in large-format editions of Homer...its influence on German printing was probably greater and longer lasting than that of any of the other fine presses" (Cave, 'The Private Press'). The present set, with its carefully chosen type and painstaking presswork, forms one of the press's greatest achievements. Exhibited in the Pierpont Morgan Library exhibition, 'The Art of the Printed Book', 1973.
