THE BLACK TULIP

First edition with these illustrations. Publisher's original red cloth with black titles and decoration in black to the upper board, titles in gilt and decoration in black to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with eight full page illustrations in black and white by John Hassall. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping to the spine tips, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, toned to the text pages and with a gift inscription and short closed tear to the front endpaper are otherwise clean throughout. All the illustrations are present and in fine condition, although bound slightly differently to where the illustration list suggests (within a couple of pages). Complete with original rubbed, nicked and spotted dustwrapper that has just minor loss at the corners.

One of the prolific poster artist John Hassall's earliest, (if not the first), commission for book illustrations. Seemingly scarce in first edition, certainly so in the original dustwrapper.
