FARTHEST NORTH. Being the record of a voyage of exploration of the ship Fram 1893-96 and of a fifteen months' sleigh journey by Dr. Nansen and Lieut. Johansen. With an appendix by Otto Sverdrup, captain of the Fram.

First edition. Two volumes. Publisher's original blue-green ribbed cloth, spines lettered in gilt, title and illustration in gilt to upper boards. Etched frontispiece portrait, 16 chromolithographs, 112 plates, 4 folding coloured maps and numerous in-text illustrations. A very good set, the bindings bright with only minor rubbing and bumping to the extremities. The contents are clean and fresh and entirely complete. There is the armorial bookplate of Sir Henry Kimber to the front pastedown of volume one, his neat ownership signature to the front endpapers, and a little browning and spotting to the preliminary pages. Volume two has some minor cracking to the inner hinges (but still holding firm) and a slight lean. All plates and the four folding maps (two at the rear of each volume) are present as called for. There are some tape repairs and offsetting to the maps at the back of volume one. Nevertheless, a pleasing set.

An account of the Norwegian explorer's 1893-96 Fram expedition to the North Pole. A classic text on polar exploration, superbly illustrated.
