A CAGE FOR THE NIGHTINGALE

First edition, first printing. Publisher's original blue cloth with silver titles to the spine, in the David James designed dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with spotting to the closed text block edge and a thin strip of offsetting to the endpapers are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the original dustwrapper that is a little rubbed and nicked to the extremities. Not price-clipped (15s net to the lower front flap). Scarce.

The seventh novel (of eleven) by the master of the 'metaphysical Gothic' novel Phyllis Paul, all of which are scarce in first edition. The author, of which little is known, was championed in her lifetime by critics and fellow authors such as Elizabeth Jane Howard, Elizabeth Bowen, C. P. Snow, Graham Greene and V. S. Pritchett.
