First edition, first printing. Publisher's original black cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the Adrian Bailey illustrated dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding firm with minor bumping to the corners, the spine slightly rolled. The contents, with a little offsetting to the blurb, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed, nicked and marked dustwrapper that has a few short closed tears to the edges and some toning at the spine and flap folds. Not price-clipped (16s net to the front flap).
Stan Barstow's first, and most celebrated, novel. Later adapted by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall, into the John Schlesinger directed film of the same name, starring Alan Bates, June Ritchie and Thora Hird.
