First US edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Original light green cloth with black titles to the spine, in the Consuelo Joerns illustrated dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth with some faint mottling. There is slight offsetting to the free endpapers and a few faint spots to the closed text-block edge, the contents are otherwise clean throughout and without previous owners' stamps or inscriptions. Complete with the lightly rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper that is just a little worn at the edges. Not price-clipped ($3.95 to the front flap). Scarce in the American first printing.
Signed by Stan Barstow in blue ink on the front free endpaper. The author's first, and most celebrated, novel. Later adapted by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall, into the John Schlesinger directed film of the same name, starring Alan Bates, June Ritchie and Thora Hird.
