The first edition of the fantasy novel, conceived by Siobhan Dowd prior to her early death and written by Patrick Ness, following the experiences of a boy who struggles to cope with the consequences of his mother's illness, and who is repeatedly visited in the middle of the night by a monster who tells stories. Ness and the book's illustrator, Jim Kay, respectively won the Carnegie Medal and the Greenaway Medal in 2012, making it the only book to have ever won both. The novel was later adapted into the 2016 film of the same name, starring Sigourney Weaver and Liam Neeson.
