First edition, first printing. Original blue cloth with purple titles to the spine, in the Frank Kelly Frease illustrated dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding firm, with some wear and light bumping to the extremities and some light marks to the cloth. There is a previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, light offsetting to the endpapers and a little spotting to the prelims and closed text-block edge, the contents are otherwise clean and without previous owners' stamps or inscriptions. Complete with the rubbed, chipped and creased dustwrapper which has a few short closed tears at the edges. There are four large pieces of tape along the edges of the underside of the dustwrapper. Not price-clipped ($2.75 on the front flap).

A science fiction novel about the first child to be born for thousands of years to a society of immortals. Expanded from a shorter version first published in 1948 in Startling Stories magazine, which was Clarke's first novel. It was then extensively reworked again and published under the title 'The City and The Stars' in 1956.
