AN ELIZABETHAN: SIR HORATIO PALAVICINO

First edition, first printing. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in dustwrapper. A fine copy, tight and square, the contents, apart from some minor offsetting to front and rear endpapers, remain clean and without inscriptions or stamps. In the very good dustwrapper showing some minor shelf-wear, a few nicks and small tears along the top edges, and some minor staining to the front panel. The spine is minimally toned. Not price-clipped and correctly priced (45s. net) to the front flap. A sharp copy, apparently unread; scarce in the dustwrapper.

Published nine years before Stone's groundbreaking 'The Crisis of the Aristocracy', this study of a Genoese merchant who became a member of the Elizabethan landed gentry, was the author's first monograph. A year earlier he contributed the volume on 'Sculpture in Britain in the Middle Ages' to the Pelican History of Art.
