First edition, first printing. Publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A very good copy, the binding firm with some bumping and minor fraying to the corners and slightly rolled spine. The cloth with some marks to the rear board is otherwise bright. The contents, spotted to the endpapers and occasionally the margins throughout are otherwise clean and free from inscriptions or stamps. The title pages is printed in red and black.

The author's second novel of which 3000 copies of the first edition were printed. The basis for the 1951 Carol Reed directed film of the same name starring Trevor Howard, Ralph Richardson, Robert Morley and Wendy Hiller.
