First edition, first printing. Original green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in the dustwrapper designed by Michael Harvey. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean without inscriptions or stamps. There is some very light spotting to the fore-edge of the page block, and a small patch of soiling to the outer tip of the lower page block edge. Complete with the dustwrapper showing some minor soiling, rubbing, and a few light spots to the spine. There is a 10 cm horizontal/diagonal crease to the lower edge of the rear panel. Not price-clipped (42s net to the front flap). Overall, a bright, clean copy.

"This volume contains all the essays which Mr Greene wishes to preserve in book form. Many of them were included in 'The Lost Childhood', published in 1951; some of these have been rewritten or expanded. Over a third of them are assembled together for the first time" (from the jacket).
