"From the darkest and most hopeless of worlds, the House of the Dead, Anubis, Death's master, restores life to his servant and sends him on a mission of vengeance." Zelazny's 'Creatures of Light and Darkness', first published in the US in 1969, began life as an experiment which the author never intended to publish. The novel is written in the present tense throughout, with a chapter in verse and a concluding chapter laid out as a play script. When Zelazny told his friend and fellow author Samuel R. Delany about the work, Delany persuaded him to publish it. It is dedicated "To Chip Delany, Just Because...".
