Inscribed by Roland Penrose in black ink on the front free endpaper: "For / Mario / long & lasting love / Roland". Roland Penrose (1900-1984), the artist and leading promoter of Surrealism, was the author of numerous works concerning the lives and art of several of his close friends, including Man Ray, Picasso, Max Ernst and Joan Mirů. As one of the organisers of the 1936 London International Surrealist Exhibition, which led to the establishment of the English surrealist movement, Penrose was at the heart of the development of abstract art in Britain, and later promoted the work of Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, amongst others. The recipient of the present copy of his exploration of the work of Man Ray, was Mario Amaya (1933-1986), an art critic, expert on Art Nouveau, and founder of 'Art and Artists' magazine, who was famously caught in the crossfire when Valerie Solanas attempted to assassinate Andy Warhol. A wonderful presentation copy, superbly embellished with an original colourful abstract composition by Penrose.
