First edition, first printing. Signed Limited Edition. Association copy. Publisher's original quarter vellum over black boards, white ski tracks to the upper board, titles in gilt to the spine. Top edge of pages gilt. Colour frontispiece of the author by Charles Amherst Villiers. In the supplied clear plastic glassine. A stunning fine copy, the binding square and tight, without rubbing or tarnishing of the vellum. The contents are spotlessly clean throughout. A stellar example with a fabulous association.
The standard issue of Fleming's only Signed Limited Edition is numbered "one" to "250". This copy, one of only 35 marked "presentation" and reserved for the author and publisher's private distribution, has the very light pencil ownership signature of Fleming's friend and alleged MI6 agent Richard Hughes to the front pastedown. Australian born journalist Richard "Dikko" Hughes (1906-1984) lived and worked in Hong Kong as Far-East correspondent for the Times Newspaper. The hard drinking ex-boxer first met the James Bond author in 1959 on the Asia leg of Fleming's five week "Thrilling Cities" tour. Hughes acted as local guide whilst Fleming gathered material for his popular newspaper series and subsequent novels. Hughes' legend is such that he is the acknowledged model for two fictional spies: "Dikko Henderson" in Ian Fleming's You Only Live Twice (the novel is also jointly dedicated to him), and "Craw" the British MI6's station chief in Hong Kong, in John le Carré's The Honourable Schoolboy.
