First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Publisher's original grey cloth with red titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, toned to the pulp paper stock, with a previous owner's name to the front endpaper, and with a small paper bookseller's label to the front pastedown are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that remains bright and attractive. Not price-clipped ($2.50 to the upper front flap).
Inscribed by the author in black ink at the bottom of the front endpaper "For Nancy / This was the way / Fiesta used to be - / Enjoy - / Dorothy B. Hughes". The novel formed the basis for the 1947 Academy Award nominated film noir, directed by, and starring Robert Montgomery. (Hubin; Johnson, Kevin: The Dark Page).
