THE BOOK OF FAIRY POETRY

First edition, first printing and notably the first publication of artwork based on the writing of J. R. R. Tolkien (here illustrating 'Goblin Feet'). Original taupe cloth with titles and decorations to the spine and upper titles in navy. Top edge grey. Illustrated endpapers, and 16 tissue-guarded colour plates tipped onto grey card, as well as black and white illustrations throughout the text by Warwick Goble. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm, the extremities lightly rubbed and bumped, the cloth clean and bright. The contents, with a small nick to the edge of the title page and some light spotting are otherwise clean and complete and without inscriptions or stamps. A little marking to the bottom edge of the closed page block. One plate has a light corner crease otherwise all illustrations are in fine condition. An attractive example.

A collection of poetry and verse about fairies by authors such as William Shakespeare, John Keats, Andrew Lang, Ben Johnson and J. R. R. Tolkien, all beautifully illustrated by Warwick Goble.
