First edition, first printing in book form. James Baldwin's highly influential work on race relations. Publisher's oatmeal cloth with titles in red to the upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. Top edge red. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm with several tiny indentations to the middle of the lower board. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper which is a little faded to the spine and with the same small indentations to the lower panel. Not price-clipped ($3.50 to the upper front flap). An attractive example.
Comprising two essays "My Dungeon Shook: Letter to my Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Emancipation" and "Down at the Cross: Letter from a Region of My Mind" both of which were published in magazine form in late 1962.
