First edition, first printing. Original olive-green cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the dustwrapper illustrated with a painting by Paul Trouillebert (1829-1900). Publisher's decorative endpapers. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean throughout. Spine tips are a touch rubbed, the upper tip a little pushed. A few light spots to the fore-edge. Complete with the neatly price-clipped dustwrapper, with a small nick to the lower outer corner of the front panel. A nice copy.
The author's second novel, and the first in a French Trilogy that continues with 'Birdsong' and 'Charlotte Gray'. 'A beautifully controlled and restrained story which catches character, period and place in a subtle but absorbing manner, rather like a prose Vermeer' (Piers Paul Read).
