THE IDEA OF A CHRISTIAN SOCIETY

First edition, first printing. Original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth a little rubbed and toned at the extremities. The contents, with light spotting to the closed text block edge and prelims are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. A text adapted from a series of lectures given by T. S. Eliot at Cambridge University on the need for a new American and European society rooted in Christianity, which Eliot believed to be the antidote to the ills and pitfalls of modern society, particularly as they presented themselves on the cusp of World War II. The first edition was published 26 October 1939 in an edition of 2000 copies. (Gallup A35).
