First edition in English, first printing. Publisher's original red cloth with titles in black to the upper board and in gilt to the spine. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with the front inner hinge slightly starting, splitting to the cloth covering the outer hinges which has been neatly repaired, and wear to the spine ends. The contents with the small ink ownership inscription of the artist Percy Hague Jowett (1882-1955) to the front free endpaper and a few pencil notes to the rear pastedown are otherwise clean throughout.
The uncommon first English edition of this collection of short stories by Chekhov. The title story explores the impact of a chance kiss upon the mind of a young man, whose thoughts become increasingly enveloped in longing daydreams and a growing sense of ennui. Percy Jowett became head of the Chelsea School of Art in 1927, and in 1935, principal of the Royal College of Art, succeeding William Rothenstein, notably going on to give the sculptor Henry Moore his first job.
