THE LIFE OF CHARLOTTE BRONTĖ Author of "Jane Eyre", "Shirley", "Villette", &c.

First edition, first printing. Two volumes. Handsomely bound by Bayntun of Bath in three-quarter dark-blue morocco over blue cloth, ruled in gilt. Each spine with five raised bands, compartments decorated in gilt and titles in gilt. Top edges gilt. Pale marbled endpapers. The three steel-engraved illustrations present and correct: two in Vol. 1 (portrait frontispiece with tissue guard, MS page facsimile facing p. 84), one in Vol. 2 (frontispiece 'View of Haworth Parsonage and Church' with tissue guard). A near fine set, the bindings square, firm and bright with just a hint of rubbing to the joints and corners. The contents with a touch of foxing to the engraved frontispieces are otherwise wonderfully clean and fresh throughout and remain free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. A superb set.

A beautiful example of the first edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's posthumous biography of Charlotte Brontė. (Sadleir, 'Excursions in Victorian Bibliography', p. 207-8).
