First edition, first printing. Original black cloth with gilt and red lettering to the spine and monochrome moonlight illustration to front and rear panels, in the Sax designed dustwrapper. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean and without inscriptions or stamps. The spine tips are a little bumped, there is some very light spotting to the page block edges and a small patch of light offsetting to the front free endpaper. In the dustwrapper, lightly faded to the spine with some minor rubbing to folds, but otherwise bright and clean. Not price-clipped (18s net to the front flap). A very nice copy.
A novel featuring the character of Colonel Verney, who first appeared in "To the Devil — A Daughter" (1953).
