First edition, first printing. Original red cloth with black lettering and decorations to spine and front panel, with the title stamped in gold to the front panel. A very good copy, the cloth, lettering and ornament bright and clean. The binding is a little shaken, with one or two breaches visible between page gatherings. Mild toning/offsetting to free endpapers. Priced (1/6) to the lower spine edge. A nice copy of a scarce title.
John Bloundelle-Burton (1850-1917), better known as a journalist at 'The Standard' wrote a number of novels at the end of the nineteenth century. 'The Silent Shore' (published in the USA as 'The Mystery of St. James' Park' two years later) was the author's first novel. The 1886 date provided by Hubin is confirmed by the tiny Roman numerals '[10/86]' printed at the foot of the final page. (Hubin).
