First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Domestic issue (printed by Billings). Publisher's original dark blue cloth with gilt titles and decoration to the spine, in dustwrapper. Top edge navy blue. Fold out map to the rear. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, with a little softening to the spine ends, the cloth and gilt fresh. The contents, with some very light offsetting to the endpapers and pastedowns and a few spots to the margins of the last few pages are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. The map is in fine condition. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased, price-clipped dustwrapper that is a little faded along the top edge of the spine and front panel, with a water mark to the underside at the lower spine (not showing through to the printed side).
Signed by Christopher Tolkien in black ink on the front free endpaper. J. R. R. Tolkien's creation story and Norse-style epic history of the world in which The Lord of the Rings is set. Compiled and edited by his son, Christopher.
